My mask

Alongside your NIV machine, you have been given a face mask, which is how the air is delivered to you.

All masks have a cushion to make a good seal on the face and make it comfortable to wear, head straps to hold it in place over your head and a port to attach the tube that comes from the machine.

There are several different types of face mask for NIV, but most people start with a full face mask, for use during sleep. This covers your nose and mouth. Masks come in various sizes and your care team will select one to fit your face shape and size.

When you were given your mask you will have practiced putting it on a few times. You can watch our short film to help remind you of the best way to put it on and adjust it, and also read our top tips from other NIV users.

If you do need to undo the velcro regularly (e.g. if you find it hard to manage fastening the clips) it could be worth marking the right position on the strap with a permanent marker so it’s easy to get it in the same position every time.
