Bedtime with NIV

Bedtime with NIV

For you and your bedtime partner it can seem very alien to suddenly have this seemingly daunting mask arrive in bed with you. Who invited Darth Vader to sleep over?

It may seem like putting the mask on is an urgent and serious task and that there is no longer room for a goodnight kiss and snuggle. The good news is NIV does not need to stop this at all! You are still the boss of your bedtime routine and NIV is there to serve you.

Many people worry NIV will be noisy, but are pleasantly surprised by how quiet the machine is when in use and soon get used to it. Lots of couples find they are able to keep on sharing a bed together and that bedtime soon becomes normal again.

Watch our short film about people’s experiences of sleeping with NIV and read our top tips for some practical advice.

The mask blows out cool air when you breathe out - great for hot flushes or summer weather, but keep an extra blanket handy to cover up - especially your hands - if needed.

This blast of air can have an interesting effect on your bedtime partner’s hairstyle too! Using a small cushion or similar can help deflect the airflow if it becomes too bothersome or if the ‘teddyboy look’ is not their thing!

Tuck your tube in a safe position to keep it out of the way. Even if you did lay on it, it will still keep its shape, but best to make sure this won't happen in the first place. You could tuck it up and over your pillow, or by a handrail.
