How is my NIV controlled?
Your NIV is delivered through a machine that is programmed and set by your care team.
The good news for you and your carers is that all the difficult settings are already set in place before you take your NIV machine home. These settings are then locked so you (or even a curious child!) cannot accidentally change them.
These settings will have been carefully chosen for you based upon the tests that were done at the care centre, and other information your team gathered on you, such as your age, height, weight. The amount of air and the pressure is set to be just right for you. You will see your care team regularly and they will review these settings, based upon your feedback and any changes they observe in you.

The settings of your machine can be changed if you feel they are not right for you.
It is important that you are comfortable using your NIV machine. The strength of the setting on your NIV machine can be altered to make it easier for you, as your needs can change. Changes to the settings can either be done by your care team, if you bring in your machine with you, or some machines can be programmed remotely over the internet. So if you are finding it difficult to use the NIV machine, do contact your centre to find out what can be changed to make things more comfortable for you.
